What is GSI?

Green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) is a type of nature-based solution designed to treat water quality issues, reduce urban runoff and flooding, and help conserve water.

Examples of GSI include permeable pavement, bioswales (or bioretention systems), green rooftops, and rain gardens.

Why do we have to maintain GSI?

Without proper maintenance, GSI systems can become inefficient. Dead or dying vegetation can reduce infiltration rates; mulch needs to be replaced to keep evaporation rates low; and inorganic and organic debris can clog the system. Replacing soil media and plants, as well as conducting routine checks, helps to ensure GSI systems remain functional.

What is OCCC’s GSI Training Program?

In partnership with Olaunu, OCCC corpsmembers complete a 40-hour course that prepares them to take the National Green Infrastructure Certification Program.

Corpsmembers participate in both classroom and field training where they learn industry vocabulary, techniques, basic landscape engineering and architecture, and project management.

To properly train corpsmembers, OCCC has begun construction on two bioswales in front of its Anaheim office building. The construction of the bioswales, in partnership with G&Z Building Company Inc., is currently being used as the field-component for corpsmember training. Once completed, the bioswales will serve as an active Training and Demonstration Garden for ongoing operations and maintenance.

On June 26, 2026, OCCC welcomed State and regional officials, local agencies, OCCC supporters, and members of the public to a Ribbon Cutting Celebration to commemorate the completion of the GSI Training & Demonstration Garden.
